ReadytoWork Success Story: Olivia Nakavuma

Olivia Nakavuma graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Procurement and Supply Chain Management from Makerere University Business School.

Just before she completed her studies, a lecturer told her class about the ReadytoWork programme. "I signed up and it turned out to be a good opportunity for me to learn how to express myself in a professional environment. I learnt how to get along with co-workers, communicate with superiors and manage change," she says.

At the end of the programme, Olivia was recommended for an internship opportunity at Steel and Tube Industries.

I was called for interviews and thankfully, the ReadytoWork programme had a session on how to handle oneself during a job interview. During the interview, I expressed myself well, I maintained eye contact and answered each question confidently,

Olivia emerged successful and enrolled as a trainee at the company. She says it was very easy for her to blend in at work because of the training through the ReadytoWork programme. "I was placed under the production unit. At the end of my internship period, I approached my supervisor about being retained. She spoke to the head of department who then spoke to the human resource manager. I was asked to deliver my updated CV which I did with ease since I had learnt how to write one as well."

She adds that, "A month later, I got feedback. I was so happy to learn that I was going to be retained. We discussed salary and expectations and I was given a contract which I signed and started earning a salary."

After being hired, Olivia received more training, was added responsibility and is now amassing job experience.
